Privacy--The Elephant In Your Virtual Room

Privacy--we all want it, but who actually has it? I read a tweet the other day about someone that was in the restroom and was reporting the writing on the stall walls...And I wondered if that is really what our world has come to. Either way, a few things to note, and a few quick ways to protect a little bit of your information.

NOTE: This is, of course, NOT a completely fail-proof plan. But I wanted to kill 15 minutes and this seemed a worthy venture.

First, an interesting video on how Google may be spying on you--and if you didn't know that, give yourself a pat on the head. Google can read that I'm posting on this blog, and no one is reading it! Crazy.

So a few things you can do: protect yourself if you use Google products. Here's the Google Analytics Opt-out plug-in that they mention in the video. And while we're at it, an advertising cookie opt-out plug-in. But remember, these only work on the computers that you install it on, not on your account universally.

This being said, I don't think that Google is "big brother." First off, the U.S. Government is doing a fine job doing that. (TOPICAL!) But in all seriousness, the best rule of thumb for internet safety--DON'T PUT EVERYTHING ONLINE. If you don't enter in your information into certain aspects of the online community, they won't end up there (unless someone else has that info). Computers will always need information input into them in order to work, and who controls that input? We do. So unplug every once in a while, read a book (as I'm about to do in 2 minutes) and don't post your life in 140 characters or less. You're worth more than that.

I realize I'm still talking to no one, but I guess I had to remind myself. Whoopie!
